Assessing the Effectiveness of Patient Safety Education on Clinical Practice Adherence Among Nursing Students

Abstract

This comprehensive study investigates the longitudinal impact of an innovative, simulation-enhanced patient safety education curriculum on clinical practice adherence among nursing students. Traditional patient safety education has often relied on didactic approaches with limited practical application, leading to inconsistent adherence to safety protocols in clinical settings. Our research introduces a novel pedagogical framework that integrates immersive virtual reality simulations, deliberate practice methodology, and cognitive apprenticeship principles to bridge the theory-practice gap. We employed a mixed-methods approach with a cohort of 347 nursing students across three academic institutions, tracking their performance over 24 months through direct observation, standardized patient encounters, and electronic health record audits. The intervention group received the enhanced curriculum featuring scenario-based learning modules that replicate high-stakes clinical situations requiring immediate safety decisions. Our findings reveal a statistically significant improvement in adherence to patient safety protocols (p < 0.001) compared to control groups receiving traditional education. Qualitative analysis identified three key factors contributing to improved adherence: enhanced situational awareness, development of safety-focused clinical reasoning patterns, and increased confidence in error reporting. The study demonstrates that targeted educational interventions incorporating realistic simulation and deliberate reflection can substantially improve the translation of patient safety knowledge into consistent clinical practice. These findings have important implications for nursing education curriculum design and patient safety outcomes in healthcare delivery systems.
