Exploring the Effects of Telehealth on Nursing Workload and Quality of Care in Home Healthcare Settings

Posted: Mar 30, 2022

Abstract

The integration of telehealth technologies into home healthcare represents a significant transformation in nursing practice delivery, yet the comprehensive effects on nursing workload and subsequent quality of care remain inadequately understood. Traditional research approaches have often treated workload as a unidimensional construct, failing to capture the complex interplay between technological systems and the nuanced nature of nursing care. This study addresses this gap by examining telehealth implementation through a multidimensional lens that considers cognitive, physical, temporal, and emotional dimensions of nursing workload simultaneously. The contemporary healthcare landscape has witnessed rapid telehealth adoption, particularly in home care settings where nurses operate with considerable autonomy. While existing literature documents patient satisfaction and cost reduction benefits, the impact on the nurses who constitute the primary interface between technology and patient care requires deeper investigation. Our research questions were formulated to explore this underexamined relationship: How does telehealth implementation affect the multidimensional aspects of nursing workload in home healthcare? What is the relationship between workload changes induced by telehealth and quality of care indicators? How do nurses perceive and adapt to these technological changes over time?
