Exploring the Impact of Team Communication Training on Patient Outcomes in Surgical Nursing Units

Posted: Jul 29, 2024

Abstract

The complex and high-stakes environment of surgical nursing units demands exceptional communication capabilities among healthcare teams. Despite widespread recognition of communication's critical role in patient safety, traditional training approaches have yielded inconsistent results, with many interventions failing to produce sustained improvements in clinical outcomes. This research addresses this gap by developing and evaluating a novel team communication training framework specifically designed for the unique challenges of surgical nursing environments. Our approach diverges from conventional communication training models by integrating principles from cognitive psychology, organizational behavior, and human factors engineering to create a holistic intervention that addresses both technical communication skills and the underlying cognitive processes that enable effective information exchange under pressure. Surgical nursing units represent particularly challenging communication environments due to rapid patient turnover, complex interdisciplinary collaboration requirements, and the critical nature of timing in postoperative care. Traditional communication training in healthcare has often focused on standardized protocols such as SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation) or structured handoff tools, without adequately addressing the dynamic, adaptive communication needs of surgical teams.
